Crash Course in Arizona Studies
Arizona History Museum / AHS Museum at Papago Park

Japanese American Experience During World War II
AHS Museum at Papago Park
AHS and the Japanese American Citizen’s League collaborate in an incredible opportunity for elementary, middle and high school teachers to learn about Japanese American culture and World War II internment. This interactive hands-on workshop features guest speakers, guided tours, and a wealth of take home resources ready for the classroom. Contact Education Staff for more information.

AHS 101:  Connecting Classrooms, Communities, and Cultural Institutions
AHS 101 is an introduction to museums as a community resource.  This workshop explains how teachers can access the primary resources the museum houses.

AHS 202:  Reading Exhibits and Artifacts
How do you read, interpret, and analyze artifacts and exhibits?  Do different types of museums interpret the same object differently?  This workshop answers these questions and models critical thinking instruction.

Views from the Home Front: Arizona during WWII
Teachers learn how Arizona was transformed by WWII.  Topics covered are:  the internment of Japanese citizens and aliens, the POW camp at Papago Park, immigration to the state, and the economic boom.

Moving To America:  The Immigration Experience
This workshop begins with coverage of national immigration trends through the use of legislation from the late 1700s to the present.  The last part of the workshop looks at the immigration trends on a state level.  Presenters also cover modern immigration issues.

Reading Historical Photographs
Learn how to read a photograph for historical clues.  This workshop relies on observation and deductive reasoning skills.  Students learn the story behind the photograph through historical interpretation.

Garbalogy
Archaeologists sift through remnants of what used to be. They use inductive and deductive reasoning skills along with the scientific method to recreate history.  Participants learn archaeological and critical thinking skills as they sift through a household’s trash as they discover who these people were.

Arizona Tales
This workshop is for teachers K-8.  Presenters model activities that use children’s literature to teach Arizona history and geography.

Arizona Story
The Arizona Historical Society has recently published (2009) a new 4th Grade Social Studies text book, The Arizona Story.  It is a mix of historical fiction and history.  Learn how to use stories to tell Arizona’s history.
