Flagstaff in 1969

Following a brief look at Flagstaff’s 1969 population, city hall, and leaders, this discussion will examine the first major industries dating from 1876 and then look at how they fared in 1969. We will explore how the Mountain Town became an automobile transportation hub and why unexpected foresight by a local priest made a huge and everlasting difference. Likewise, the AT&SF Railway looked very different in 1969. Why? We will look at NAU and the anti-war movement as well as the “Really Big Show” that dated from 1930 and ultimately became too big. An aerial photo taken from 17,500 feet will show what was and wasn’t developed. And finally, we will look at a photo (taken from Mars Hill) of the smog in downtown Flagstaff and wonder where the ‘mountain air’ was hiding. Presented by John Westerlund.
