Join the Arizona Historical Society on Thursday, November 19, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. for a conversation with Dr. Lydia Otero about their 2019 book, In the Shadows of the Freeway: Growing Up Brown & Queer. Combining personal memoir and historical archives, Otero takes readers on a journey to life on Farmington Road and the mid-20th century barrio that existed on the social margins of Tucson, Arizona. Otero witnessed the expansion of Interstate 10 (I-10) and how it isolated and separated the barrio and poor residents from the rest of the city. Facing adversity and inequities, Otero is resilient, reconciling their love of place and family with the realities of urbanization in the city they have long called home.
