Event Details

In 1861, war between the United States and the Apache Chiricahua seemed inevitable. The Apache lived on a heavily traveled Emigrant and Overland Mail Trail and routinely raided it. The historian Doug Hocking examines the events that resulted in the confrontation of Lieutenant George Bascom and the Apache chief Cochise following the kidnapping of the young boy Felix Ward: an incident believed to be the spark of the Apache Wars. Was Lieutenant Bascom the hero or villain of this confrontation? Arizona Historical Society Board Member Doug Hocking proposes a controversial but well researched answer.
